THOU "SHALL NOT" KILL
On Memorial Day, May 30, 2010 under the leadership of two local Pastors, The United Communities of America and Detroit citizens mobilized the first "Thou Shall Not Kill" campaign. Our first goal is to distribute 50,000 posters that read GOD SAID "Thou Shall Not Kill" to local residents and businesses.
The poster campaigned was launched the week of June 26, 2010. Special thanks to Waterman and Sons printing located on Wyoming in Detroit who donated the first 500 GOD SAID "Thou Shall Not Kill "posters. As of November 2010, we have distributed 2400 posters and over 5000 flyers thanks to Detroit volunteers and supporters. Posters have been distributed citywide through local churches, citizens, and businesses.
Poster distribution will continue until the 50,000 goal is met.
THE CITY WIDE DAY OF PEACE AND HEALING
On November 9, 2010, The United Communities of America proposed to the Detroit City Council a request to declare the 22nd day of each month as The City Wide Day of Peace and Healing. They unanimously agreed. On November 16, 2010, a testimony of resolution was signed by all 9 council members stating their support of this initiative. This outstanding achievement is another step towards the goal of making America safer.
Each 22nd day of the month every citizen is asked to circle that calendar day and create ways to make peace. Peace with our past, ourselves, our families, our co workers, our neighbors, and our God. Every religious organization, community organization, school, fraternity, sorority, labor union, mosque, employer and media is asked to create events that promote peace on this 1 day. Even those involved in gang violence are asked to hold their piece (peace) for just 1 day. We must make peace a priority if we want to live in it.
We are cooperating with local law enforcement, community organizations, and political officials as they communicate official legislation that speaks toward achieving the goals of a safer more peaceful America.
Beginning January 2011, The UCOA will launch another initiative. "Life after Life", our grief group support services will be held bi monthly. We have a specially designed curriculum to help those affected by violent crime obtain help with grieving.
